Key facts

TeamPublic team
Why

Ethereum Foundation (Stiftung Ethereum, Zug, Switzerland) supports the protocol; its register entry lists Ayako Miyaguchi (President), Vitalik Buterin (Vice-President), Patrick Storchenegger (member), Hsiao-Wei Wang (manager/board member since 2025-04-10) and Grant Thornton AG as auditor (Fundraiso, a secondary mirror of the Swiss register). Another directory lists Vitalik Buterin (co-founder) and Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stanczak as co-executive directors since 2025. The Foundation states it does not control or lead Ethereum.

source source source
Legal entityIdentified
Why

Stiftung Ethereum (Ethereum Foundation), a Swiss non-profit foundation, Canton of Zug, founded 2014-07-13 and published in the Swiss Commercial Register 2014-07-17; supervised by the Swiss Federal Supervisory Authority for Foundations per a secondary directory. Registry details were read through Fundraiso, not the registry itself.

source source
Independent auditPublished
Why

Ethereum Foundation ran the Fusaka upgrade audit contest on Sherlock (2025-09-15 to 2025-10-13, 2M USD reward pool, co-sponsored by Gnosis and Lido). This is a competitive audit contest of the upgrade code, not a single named-firm report, and the page shows no results. Other audits of individual clients (Geth, Lighthouse, etc.) exist but were not read here.

source source
Control riskNo privileged key
Why

ethereum.org states no one owns or controls the protocol; changes go through public EIPs and AllCoreDevs calls, and protocol developers cannot force node operators to adopt upgrades. ETH is the native asset (no token contract with an admin key or freeze function was found). The Ethereum Foundation holds ETH and funds development, but states it does not control or lead Ethereum; holding tokens is not admin control by itself. Developers have practical influence because they write the client software. Not independently verified at the code level.

source source
New supply, next 12 monthsNot verified
Why

No fixed unlock or vesting schedule published for ETH; new ETH is issued to validators by a protocol formula (depends on amount staked) and part of fees is burned. Observed net supply change per ultrasound.money API: +0.071% over the last 30 days (122,022,372 to 122,108,803 ETH) and +0.017% over 7 days; this is an observation, not a forward schedule, so the field is left null.

source
Revenue evidenceCheckable on-chain
Why

Fees and burned ETH are visible on DefiLlama (fees about 200.0M USD, burn-based revenue about 62.0M USD, trailing year). No company revenue concept; the Ethereum Foundation's own finances were not reviewed.

Market cap$314Brank 2 · 7 Oct 2026
Fully diluted value$314B
Annual fees (DefiLlama)$200M
How measured

DefiLlama trailing 1-year totals read 2026-10-07. Fees = gas (base + priority) plus blob fees paid by users; revenue = ETH burned (base fees + blob fees), per DefiLlama methodology. Priority fees go to validators and are not counted as revenue.

Market cap per $1 of fees1,570 x

How counted

Sum of the ten largest addresses on Etherscan's accounts page (read 2026-10-07), percentages as shown: 75.110 (Beacon Deposit Contract, i.e. staked ETH of many validators), 1.732 (Wrapped Ether contract), 1.635 (Binance 7), 0.9996 (Robinhood), 0.8034 (Upbit 41), 0.6310 (Base Portal, bridge contract), 0.5976 (Arbitrum bridge), 0.4254 (Binance hot wallet 20), 0.3726 (Binance-Peg Tokens contract), 0.3686 (Bitfinex 19). My own sum. INCLUDES contracts, bridges and exchange addresses. Excluding the Beacon deposit contract the other nine sum to 7.56%. Not individual holders.

What-if lens: which price does a multiple of fees imply?

Pick a multiple of the last 12 months of fees. The tool shows the token price that multiple would imply with today's supply. The multiple is your assumption, not our estimate. The market pays 1,570 x annual fees today.

Implied price

Fees are what users pay, not what holders receive: how much reaches token holders depends on the design (burns, treasury, fee switches, validators). The result ignores issuance, risk, growth and time. A lens to ask questions, not a valuation or advice.

Incidents and legal actions

Incidents

  • 2023-05-11 Two episodes (2023-05-11 and 2023-05-12) in which Ethereum mainnet delayed finality (4 and 9 epochs per Prysm's postmortem; about 25 minutes and about 1 hour per press), triggering the first inactivity leak. Prysm's postmortem attributes it to its client's handling of attestations needing regeneration of earlier beacon states, which exhausted resources. Outcome: Chain kept producing blocks and recovered. Prysm reports about 28 ETH in penalties and 55+ ETH in missed revenue for validators, no slashings attributed. No user balances reported lost. Client-level bug rather than a protocol exploit; included because it caused measurable validator losses. No user funds lost source
  • 2025-12-04 Fusaka mainnet Prysm incident (epochs 411439-411480): a client bug after the Fusaka upgrade caused 248 of 1,344 slots to be missed (18.5%), participation as low as 75%. Outcome: About 382 ETH in missed attestation rewards per Prysm's postmortem. No user balances reported lost. Client-level bug. No user funds lost source

Regulator and court actions

  • 2024-06-18 SEC Enforcement Division investigation touching Ethereum 2.0 / whether ETH is a security (reported earlier, 2024, by Forkast/Fortune as subpoenas to entities linked to the Ethereum Foundation). On 2024-06-18 Consensys published that the Enforcement Division notified it that it is closing its investigation into Ethereum 2.0 and will not pursue an enforcement action against Consensys. Outcome: Closed, no enforcement action, no fine. Source is Consensys's account of the SEC notification; the SEC's own letter was not read. Consensys (not the Foundation) is the party that announced it. Dismissed or closed, no merits finding source
Limits

What we could not verify

Not verified: (1) Ethereum Foundation legal and board details come from a secondary mirror of the Swiss register (Fundraiso) and another directory, not the register itself; ethereum.org's own page does not state jurisdiction. (2) Audit: only the Sherlock Fusaka contest was read (no results published on that page); audits of individual clients were not read. (3) SEC closure is reported by Consensys; the SEC letter was not read. (4) No forward unlock schedule exists, so unlock_next_12m_pct is null. (5) FDV equals market cap on CoinGecko (no max supply); the page shows 314.095B (stats table) vs 314,101,000,101 in its FAQ; entered the stats-table value. (6) Etherscan labels are Etherscan's.
